Services

We carry out fascia and soffit roof repairs and upgrades.

Traditionally, fascias and soffits were, and are still in use today, made from wood. However, they require more repairs, any rain water penetrating the fascia and soffit boards will cause the wood to rot and allow water and dampness to penetrate the roofline and eventually the loft space. Keeping up with painting the wooden boards to lengthen their life span is not really cost effective and this will need to be done more regularly. The wooden boards will need replacing at some point.

There are now newer products on the market, that provide many more advantages over the wooden fascias and soffits. New properties generally have the new upvc fascias and soffits installed and older properties can be updated. The new upvc roofline products are much more cost effective and longer lasting. Contact us for more information.

Gutters play an important role in keeping the roof dry and help prevent dampness. They are designed to allow the rain water to run off the roof, enter the gutters and flow through into the drains.  However, any blockages in the gutter system can cause problems. There is a natural build up of dirt, grime, leaves, nesting materials and so forth that can lead to blockages. The rain water will disperse and if the gutters are blocked at any point, the water can overflow, damage the mortar between the brickwork and cause damp problems to ceilings and walls. If left this can also cause problems with the foundations of a building if the water is constantly pooling.

We carry out all gutter repairs, replacing any damaged guttering, including downpipes. We also carry out upgrades to the new upvc systems which are more cost effective than the older systems. We would recommend having the gutters checked and cleaned once or twice a year to ensure there are no problems.

Roof Verges

Mortar based roof verges need regular maintenance. The verges are on the edges of the roof at the gable ends.

Traditionally the edges of the roof (gable end) are fixed with a sand/cement based mortar and help prevent birds nesting and keep out other unwanted insects. Over time the weather will affect the mortar and cause it to crack and crumble, birds also take advantage of this and use it for nesting areas, which is not ideal as it also allows for water ingress.

In renewing the mortar, we clean the old mortar off and then replace with a new mix which will stabilise the edges.

Consider having a more secure and durable replacement by having the new dry verge systems installed.

Ridge Tiles

Traditionally, ridge tiles are held in place with mortar (sand/cement mix). Again due to wear and tear and the weather conditions, the mortar will need replacing. If left the tiles will slip and allow for water ingress.

We clean the old mortar away and replace with new, ensuring the tiles are re-bedded and secure.

New properties are generally built with the dry roofing systems and older properties can be upgraded. The dry systems are a much better alternative and more cost effective solution.

Fascia Upgrades

New fascia and soffits have more advantages over the older systems, there is no maintenance, they are more durable, weatherproof, and help to keep out the birds and other creatures from settling in which in the long term can create blockages in the gutters and rain ingress through the fascias and soffits.

Taylors Roofing and Property Maintenance carry out fascia and soffit repairs and also upgrade to the new upvc systems.  These upgrades are much more beneficial and long lasting so work out more economical in the end.

There is also a choice of colour, shape and style of fascia and soffits to choose from.

They make a more aesthetically pleasing look to properties.

Flat Roof Services

We carry out all flat roof repairs and install new flat roofing.

Traditional felt materials have improved over the years and still remain one of the most popular products for flat roofs.

Felt roofing materials are the cheapest of all the flat roofing materials.

Suitable for garages, outbuildings, bay window roofing, sheds etc.

EPDM, (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), is a synthetic rubber material that is widely used in the construction industry.

It is a both a durable and flexible material and it can withstand extreme temperatures. UV protection properties, and changeable weather resistance, making it ideal for use in roofing.

It is more expensive than the traditional felt roofing material but it lasts much longer and so is more cost effective in the long run. It is proving popular and is definately worth considering having it installed on your flat roof building.

GRP Fibreglass roofing, also known as glass-reinforced plastic/polyester. It is a fibre reinforced polymer made of a plastic matrix which is reinforced by fine fibres of glass. It can be moulded and is very strong and durable.

It is the more expensive of the flat roofing materials but lasts longer than the rest and can be repaired. Maintenance for all flat roofing is recommended and lengthens the life expectancy of any flat roof material.

Repairs

We carry out all chimney repairs, from re-pointing the brickwork to re-bedding the chimney pots and securing the cowls.

We can also offer a chimney removal service, if required. So if you are considering having a loft conversion and do not use the current chimney then having the chimney taken down a level offers more roof space.

The chimney is the highest point on a roof and so takes the brunt of the weather. The mortar between the brickwork will, over time, crack and crumble due to the changeable weather conditions. This causes the chimney to become unstable and the worst scenerio is for the bricks to become loose and fall.  This can affect the roof and anything below it at ground level.

A small re-pointing service of the chimney brickwork undertaken early will prevent a larger and more expensive job, if neglected.

We can offer a roof and chimney inspection to see if there are any problems.

Roof tiles need maintaining, so if you have any loose, missing or damaged tiles they need to be replaced. Rain water will fall from the roof and into the gutters, any missing or damaged tiles will allow for water ingress which is not ideal and can cause leaks. It is also a good idea to have moss etc. removed from roofs to stop the build up as this also allows for water to eventually penetrate the tiles and let water into the roof space.

In cases where the roof tiles are old and too many are damaged to consistently replace or be cost effective, then we can install a new roof, including laying a breathable roof membrane, new treated wooden battens as well as new roof tiles.

There options on the type of tile and the colour which will be dependant on the type of building that requires a new roof. We install a range of roof materials, from pitched to flat roofs.

We carry out repairs on roof valleys and also carry out full replacement of materials, it required.

When checking valleys on a roof, we look for any holes that may allow for leakage.

A common problem with valleys are blockages, i.e. a build up of dirt, leaves etc.

Cleaning the old materials away is a must for a professional repair/renew service.

A protective liner is required underneath the flashing/roof tiles.

Metal trays can be used to allow the rain water to flow.

Lead is also used for chimneys to prevent rain water from pooling, where it meets the roof.

Dry Roof Systems

Traditional roof verges were mortar based, with a mix of sand and cement. We still carry out mortar repairs. However, with improvements in the building industry there is another option, dry verge.

Dry verge systems are much more durable and sustainable. Verge caps can withstand the changeable weather conditions and are more reliable and longer lasting than the traditional mortar. They give a nice finish to a property and there are choices of colour and design to choose from.

New builds generally have the dry verge systems installed and older properties can be converted. With dry verge there is no need for mortar and the benefits of upgrading are worth considering.

Traditionally ridge tiles were held in place with mortar, which is a mixture of sand and cement.

We do carry out mortar based repairs to keep the ridge tiles in place, although these are being replaced with a much more beneficial system known as 'dry ridge'.  Dry roofing has replaced mortar based fixings, there is no need for mortar with the new systems.

New properties/buildings generally have the dry ridge systems installed and older properties can be upgraded.

Dry Ridge Systems are much more durable, weatherproof and secure. They are also cost effective and with little maintenance required, definitely worth considering.

New Roofs

We carry out all roof repairs and replace missing, loose or broken roof tiles. In some cases constant repairs on an old roof may not be considered cost effective and a new roof may be the best way forward. On average a new roof is expected to last at least 25 years and with maintenance could last much longer.

On the installation of a new roof we remove all the old tiles, battens and membrane and replace with new materials. A new breathable roof membrane, treated wooden battens and new tiles.

There are choices on the type of tile, colour and style.

All the old roofing materials are removed from the site.
